The basic functions of trade unions have not lost their importance: employees’ conditions of work are usually better when they are collectively organized than when they are not; trade unions can also play an important part in the wider society through their involvement in particular campaigns and by acting as a counterweight to the power of the state. Can the trade unions recover some of their significance and status under very different political conditions than those they enjoyed in their heyday? Inevitably, this will depend on their powers of adaptation, and the support they receive from the state
