Learning (also) with computers: The OLPC in Greek schools

OLPC in Florina

Re-public and ΕΕ/ΛΛΑΚ invite you to 2 workshops titled ‘Learning (also) with computers: The OLPC in Greek schools’. Following the open call for the dispatch of 500 OLPC XO-1 to Greek schools, the 2 workshops aim at bringing together teachers and schools who are interested in participating in this project and at debating the next steps of this initiative.

Public data: For whom, and for what purpose;

the trial

The workshop attempted to contribute to the articulation of political proposals and activist initiatives for opening public data in Greece. The debate took place in a conjuction where there seems to be increasing pressures for the digitalization and the free distribution of public information. Apart from the distinctions between open / closed information and public / private data, the participants articulated the importance of producing quality public data and ensuring their free re-use.

Incorporating the commons in the new socialist agendas

the commons

The workshop was held in the context of the congress of the European Socialist Party, Porto, 8 December 2006. The dichotomy between the private and the public forms the basis of theories of democracy. In recent years, this distinction has been challenged: examples include the erosion of the public sphere by private interests and the increasing control of the private domain by state authorities. New concepts and practices that move beyond this primary dichotomy are needed in order to face the contemporary crisis of democratic societies. Signifying a new social and economic space beyond government regulation and market control, the commons has been proposed as a feasible institutional alternative to both private and public arrangements.
