Gendering new media theory

avatar

It all started with a blog post titled ‘Re-imagining democracy in (our own) male image‘. The post was an apt criticism against the two special editions that Re-public has published on ‘wiki politics’. This small forum is not an attempt to respond to the critique. After all, our past mistakes cannot really be corrected. Instead, our attempt is to begin exploring a theme that we had previously ignored: the intersections between gender and the new media.

Interviews on the crisis and the left

fallen sky

The global financial crisis has opened up the discussion for a more democratic governance of the economy. This series of interviews proposes an initial exploration on which institutions and mechanisms of the economic system should be re-structured, which should be abolished, and what types of arrangements might emerge in their place.

Democracy in Latin America

Latin America

If all Left wing parties in Latin America invoke the ambition of a more equal capitalism and a more inclusive political system, among other issues that define the Left, the political scene is far more diverse than the one their respective discourses could show and than what analysts have been able to conceive so far. Therefore, today’s disagreements among the governments that generally define themselves as center- left, have not gone further than making very wide references on two types of Left politics, repeating the well known analysis as to what are the factors that historically formed the progressive programs of the area.

Non-citizens

non citizens

Publishing the accounts of men and women non-citizens, we will try to initiate a dialogue on how they are living, shaping, and negotiating their individual and collective identities while inhabiting Greek national space. What is the relationship of non-Greek citizens with the basic practices that are establishing modern liberal democracy: rights, participation, freedom, labour, violence?

Out of bounds

out of bounds

Re-public has occasionally published articles outside the framework of its special issues. They include contributions by authors such as Tariq Ramadan, Mark LeVine, Stephen Hopgood, Mike Newell on topics spanning from Western Islam, participatory democracy to global civil society and global trade.
