Call for papers – Sarkozism: Politics recast?

Online journal Re-public invites contributions for its upcoming special issue entitled “Sarkozism: Politics recast?” The election of Nicolas Sarkozy as France’s president in May 2007 and his first months in office have provoked new political controversies and forcefully re-opened some of the most heating debates of the past 20 years about our political condition, such as the distinction or non-distinction between left and right, the grey zones between progressive and regresive policies, cynisim vs. idealism, the ways of doing, at least formal, politics, the role of the nation-state in the process of globalisation and the re-nationalisation of state policies in relation to the European project. The special issue will venture to explore, from a critical standpoint, the Sarkozy phenomenon.

Is there something new about Sarkozy’s politics? Can we speak of an emerging Sarkozism? If so, what are its elements, what is its ideological impact and how does it manage to articulate differing, even conflicting, matters of concern in a seemingly single political agenda. And finally, is it necessary to articulate an anti-, or a non-, Sarkozism? What will it consist of?

Essays should be approximately 1.500 words long.
